Introduction
Asphalt pavement recycling technologies are cost effective and environmentally friendly, conserving natural resources, minimizing greenhouse gases and maximizing agency dollars. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA ) and the Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association ( ARRA ) hosted a three day workshop on In-Place Recycling in Minneapolis, MN on August 4-13, 2009, to promote the benefits of these technologies. The workshop, the second in a series of planned regional recycling showcases, attracted over 100 pavement professionals representing State and local DOTs, FHWA, academia, contractors, and suppliers from throughout the Midwest. The event provided an excellent forum to showcase hot In-Place recycling (HIR) and cold In-Place recycling (CIR) and Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) processes, techniques and best practices. The workshop featured field visits to two active projects which were being constructed by Midstate Reclamation, Inc. Participants were able to get a close-up look at a full depth reclamation project using fly ash and a cold In-Place project using foamed asphalt and ask questions of contractor and agency personnel on site. Additional workshops are planned for the Southeast and Northeast regions in the future. Announcements of future workshops will be made on this website.
